Florida Fire Rescue Employee Arrested for Sexual Assault

A former employee of Flagler County Fire Rescue has been arrested following disturbing allegations of sexual battery against an unconscious victim in an ambulance, according to WFTV. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 37-year-old James Tyler Melady, who hails from Daytona Beach.

Investigation Reveals Video Evidence of Patient Sexually Assaulted in Ambulance

The investigation was initiated when the Daytona Beach Police Department alerted the Sheriff’s Office about a potential case involving Melady. Detectives uncovered video footage showing Melady molesting a woman while she was incapacitated. This incident occurred in the back of a Flagler County Fire Rescue ambulance on October 17, 2021, as the victim, a former Flagler Beach resident, was being transported to a hospital.

Victim Unaware of Sexual Assault

Upon further investigation, detectives met with the victim, who had no prior knowledge of the assault. The evidence collected, including the video, prompted law enforcement to take swift action. A warrant for Melady’s arrest was issued this past Tuesday.

Arrest and Confession of Fire Rescue Employee

Melady was apprehended in Daytona Beach, where he reportedly confessed to the allegations against him. He had retired from Flagler County Fire Rescue earlier this year. Currently, Melady is being held at Volusia County Jail without bail.

Legal Rights for Victims of Paramedic Sexual Assault

In the wake of alarming cases of sexual abuse in ambulances, understanding the legal rights available to victims is more important than ever. In this interview, Florida-based sexual abuse attorney Mike Haggard discusses the options victims have for seeking accountability and support. He outlines the steps that can be taken to address these serious offenses and the importance of holding negligent parties responsible.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. What legal rights do victims have when they experience sexual abuse by a fire rescue employee or paramedic?

Attorney Mike Haggard: Victims have several legal avenues available to them. They can pursue criminal charges against the perpetrator, which can lead to incarceration. Additionally, victims can file civil lawsuits against both the individual and the agency employing them if negligence can be established.

DM: What does negligence look like in these cases?

MH: Negligence can involve inadequate training, failure to supervise, or not following proper protocols. If a medical professional acts outside their professional responsibilities, the agency can be held liable for their employee’s actions.

DM: How can victims begin this process?

MH: The first step is to report the incident to law enforcement. After that, consulting with a lawyer experienced in sexual abuse cases can help victims understand their rights and the best course of action.

DM: What support is available to victims during this difficult time?

MH: Many organizations provide counseling and legal assistance. It's important for victims to reach out for support, as they deserve to have their voices heard and their rights protected.

DM: Thank you, Mike, for sharing your insights on this important issue.
