Two special prosecutors have been assigned to a criminal investigation into Cleburne doctor John Dang. Investigators are probing allegations that Dang sexually assaulted patients, improperly prescribed medication, and stole money from at least one patient. Dang has not been arrested, but his license was suspended by the Texas Medical Board in April after they looked into the allegations against him.
Dang formerly operated a large clinic called Dang Medical Clinic near the Cleburne town square. He also used to have offices on Ridgeway Drive.
A disciplinary panel for The Medical Board determined that Dang had prescribed dangerous medication to a patient without properly evaluating her and after he was aware that she had been treated for drug addiction. He also borrowed $31,000 from her. In April 2015, he used the same woman's credit card without her knowledge to bill her for fraudulent services.
A second woman told police that Dang sexually assaulted her during an appointment for hip pain in 2006, when she was just 14 years old. This woman reported the incident to Cleburne police in 2016.
In October 2017, a second woman told investigators that Dang sexually assaulted her when she saw him for treatment of a back injury. The woman filed a report with the Cleburne police a few days later.
For unknown reasons, criminal charges were not filed in either case.
Anjali Nigamhas extensive experience representing those who have been sexually assaulted by trusted professionals. We've asked him to weigh in on the legal options available to survivors of sexual assault by medical professionals:
Unfortunately, sexual assault by doctors and other medical professionals is more common than most of us would think. Medical professionals are some of the most trusted members of our communities, and the entire doctor-patient relationship is built on this trust. While the vast majority of these professionals are honorable people, a small fraction of them are sexual predators who abuse their positions of trust in order to sexually assault their patients.
Survivors of doctor sexual assault should be aware that in addition to the criminal justice system, the civil court system is also available to help them. Filing a lawsuit against the doctor and the medical facility can help demand accountability from the perpetrator and those who failed to prevent the assault. Additionally, these lawsuits help provide financial support for damages suffered by survivors.
