Police in Chico have arrested a doctor for allegedly sexually assaulting a female patient during a medical procedure. Dr. Annamalai Ashokan was arrested on Wednesday, January 30 at his office in Chico on Jan Court, near Forest Avenue. He has been charged with felony sexual assault.
An investigation into Ashokan began after police were notified of an allegation of sexual assault. After a long investigation, detectives determined that they had sufficient evidence and probable cause to arrest the anesthesiologist.
Ashokan only practices part-time in Chico, with office hours every other week. His main practice is in Hollister.
As of February 1, there is no information regarding additional victims. Detectives have contacted state health investigators who are in charge of medical licensing investigations.
Legal Herald contributor Jason Amala is an attorney experienced in representing victims in lawsuits dealing with doctors sexually abusing patients. Here is his perspective on the legal options available to those who find themselves in such horrid situations.
“We all trust our doctors to provide us with a high standard of medical care and to conduct themselves professionally. Indeed, the vast majority of doctors are worthy of our trust. However, we must not shroud the fact that within the healthcare field exists a problem with doctors and nurses sexually abusing the individuals in their care.
Sexual assault is unimaginably traumatizing for victims and those close to them. When the perpetrator is someone trusted like a doctor or teacher, the effects are felt not only by the victim and their family but by entire communities. These predators must be held accountable for their actions and their victims deserve to get the full support they need to recover and thrive after the incident occurs. The criminal justice system handles the prosecution of sex offenders, but survivors also hold the right to file a lawsuit (in civil court) against the doctor and/or the facility where the abuse occurred.”
