Inmates Brutally Sexual Assault Another Inmate at Detention Center

According to KJAX, three inmates are facing sexual assault charges after another inmate was attacked at the Brazos County Detention Center located at 1835 Sandy Point Rd, Bryan, TX 77807.

On Sunday, October 9, 2022, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office was informed of an incident at the center. A victim was said to have been almost “choked to death” by three other inmates. One of the three inmates was said to have “assaulted the victim throughout the day.” However, the report described the victim suffering internal injuries due to the three sexually assaulting the victim with a broom. Surveillance showed the assailants attacking the victim and strangling him. The victim claimed that he was forced to give his personal account information for both the jail phone system and the commissary account.

The three attackers are each facing aggravated sexual assault charges. However, two are also facing aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon, and sexual coercion.

Filing Lawsuits For Victims Sexually Assaulted in a Detention Center

Attorney contributor Anjali Nigam helps sex abuse victims get justice by filing civil lawsuits. Anjali recently discussed the legal options available for victims sexually assaulted while in a detention center.

"Detention centers have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their inmates while serving time in the center. It is their duty to implement a security plan to prevent sexual assault by the hand of the staff or other inmates. This plan may include vetting all staff by conducting background checks, monitoring surveillance cameras throughout the prison property, and by reporting and investigating any incidents of misconduct."

"When an inmate is a victim of sexual assault, it is critical the victim is made aware of their legal rights and options for justice. Reporting the misconduct to law enforcement will ensure a criminal investigation is done. However, victims may have sufficient reasons to file a civil lawsuit against the negligent detention center. The center could be held accountable if the assault could have been prevented. Victims of sexual assault in a detention center should speak to an experienced sexual assault lawyer to fully explore their legal rights."
