ValleyCentral reported a prominent priest in Brownsville has been arrested on multiple charges related to trafficking and child sexual abuse. The Brownsville Police Department announced the arrest of Fernando Gonzalez Ortega, aged 52, following an extensive investigation. Fernando Gonzalez Ortega, 52, was serving as a priest at St. Luke’s Catholic Church located at 2800 Rockwell Dr, Brownsville, TX 78521.
According to a news release from the Brownsville Police Department, Gonzalez Ortega is facing charges including sexual performance by a child, sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual abuse of a child, trafficking of a person, and continuous trafficking of persons. The arrest was carried out on Monday at 11:40 p.m., February 12, 2024, at the 1900 block of Barnard Road, where Gonzalez Ortega was taken into custody based on active warrants.
Until his arrest, Gonzalez Ortega served as a priest at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Brownsville. However, in response to these disturbing allegations, the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville not only removed Gonzalez Ortega from active ministry but also prohibited him from exercising any priestly duties anywhere.
During the arraignment on Tuesday at the Brownsville City Jail, Gonzalez Ortega's bond was set at a staggering $800,000. To ensure compliance with the bond conditions, he must install an ankle monitor before his release, surrender his passport, and remain within Cameron County while the cases are pending, as stated by the District Attorney's Office.
In the aftermath of this distressing revelation, Bishop Daniel E. Flores expressed his deep sadness and requested prayers for the individual who came forward, now an adult, as well as their family. The bishop also extended his thoughts and prayers to the affected parishioners, the clergy across the diocese, and all parties impacted by this unfortunate situation. Bishop Flores emphasized the commitment of the diocese to provide support to victims through the Diocesan Victim's Assistance Coordinator and encouraged individuals with similar experiences to come forward and report any allegations to the authorities.
The investigation into Fernando Gonzalez Ortega's alleged crimes continues, as law enforcement authorities work diligently to uncover the full extent of the offenses and ensure justice is served. The Brownsville community, along with the Catholic Church, is left grappling with the profound shock and disappointment brought about by these deeply troubling allegations.

Anjali Nigam, Esq. (AN): Thank you, Darla. It's a pleasure to be here.
DM: With recent events surrounding the arrest of Father Fernando Gonzalez Ortega in Brownsville, there is a heightened awareness of the issue of clergy abuse within the Catholic Church. Can you elaborate on what legal options victims and their families might have against those responsible?
AN: Certainly, Darla. When individuals have suffered abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest or other clergyperson, there are legal avenues available to seek justice and compensation. Victims and their families can file civil lawsuits against the liable parties, which may include the priest, the diocese, and potentially other individuals or entities involved.
DM: What would be the basis for such a civil case? And what can victims hope to achieve through this process?
AN: Victims can base their civil case on various legal grounds, such as negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The objective is twofold: to hold those responsible accountable for their actions and to seek compensation for the physical, emotional, and psychological harm endured by the victims.
DM: How does the legal process work in these cases? Is it a lengthy and challenging endeavor for the victims?
AN: Pursuing a civil case for clergy abuse can indeed be a complex and emotionally demanding process. However, with the guidance of an experienced clergy abuse attorney, victims and their families can navigate through the legal intricacies. It typically involves gathering evidence, conducting depositions, and presenting a compelling case to demonstrate the liability of the parties involved.
DM: Are there any specific laws or statutes of limitations that victims should be aware of when considering a civil case?
AN: The laws regarding clergy abuse cases can vary depending on the jurisdiction. It's crucial for victims to consult with an attorney who specializes in this area to understand the specific laws and any applicable statutes of limitations in their state. In some instances, recent changes in legislation or the discovery of new evidence may allow victims to pursue justice even if their abuse occurred many years ago.
DM: Thank you for highlighting this important topic, Anjali. Is there a final message you would like to convey to survivors of clergy abuse?
AN: To all victims and their families, I want to emphasize that you are not alone. There is support available, both legally and emotionally. Reach out to a clergy abuse attorney who can provide guidance and help you understand your rights. Remember, your voice matters, and seeking justice can bring healing and closure.
