Silas Shelton, a 48-year-old former pastor of Blanchester Community Church, located on Main Street in Blanchester, Ohio, is now incarcerated at the Clinton County Adult Detention Center, facing four felony charges, including rape. Wilmington police revealed that the alleged abuse began in the fall of 2019, when the victim was just 14 or 15 years old, according to WLWT.
The girl and her family were active members of Shelton’s congregation. A detective involved in the investigation stated that Shelton abused his authority as a religious figure, creating an environment where the victim felt groomed, manipulated, and powerless.
Investigators have identified multiple locations where the abuse allegedly took place, including Shelton’s home in Morrow, Cowan Lake in Clinton County, and local hotel rooms. The abuse reportedly persisted for several years, continuing until just a few months ago.
Shelton was arrested without incident on Wednesday in Blanchester. His position as a trusted religious leader has made the allegations especially shocking to the community, with many expressing outrage and sadness on social media after the Wilmington Police Department posted news of the arrest.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Shelton is scheduled to appear for a preliminary court hearing next week.
Individuals with any details related to the case can contact the Wilmington Police Department at 937-382-3833.

When a trusted figure in a position of authority betrays that trust through acts of abuse within a church, it leaves victims and their families grappling with profound emotional and legal challenges. To better understand the avenues available to families seeking accountability and support, our team spoke with John Bey, an experienced Ohio attorney specializing in sexual abuse cases, for his perspective on how the legal system can provide a path forward.
Editor Darla Medina: When it comes to cases like this, what legal options are available to families of victims who have been sexually abused by someone in a position of authority, such as a pastor?
Attorney John Bey: Families in these situations have several legal paths they can take. First, they should cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure the criminal case proceeds effectively. Beyond that, they may also have the option to file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator for damages. This can include seeking compensation for emotional trauma, therapy expenses, and other impacts on the victim’s life.
Medina: Can institutions, like the church where the pastor worked, also be held accountable?
Bey: Absolutely, depending on the circumstances. If it can be shown that the church was negligent—such as failing to properly investigate complaints, ignoring red flags, or enabling the environment where the abuse occurred—they may also face legal liability. These cases can be complex, but accountability is important not only for the victim but also to protect others in the future.
Medina: What would you recommend for families who are unsure about the next steps?
Bey: My advice is to consult with an experienced attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can help families understand their rights and explore their options. It’s also important to connect with support groups or counseling services to help the victim and their loved ones through the healing process.
