A former coach with the Mesquite Independent School District has been taken into custody following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a middle school student at AC New Middle School located at 3700 S Beltline Rd, Balch Springs, TX 75181. The arrest occurred Wednesday, October 30, 2024, according to WFAA.
Sergio Gonzalez, who coached at A.C. New Middle School, faces serious charges including child grooming, classified as a third-degree felony. Concerns about his interactions with a 14-year-old student were first raised by three district employees on August 16.
The school district notified law enforcement after learning of the allegations. Following this, Gonzalez was placed on administrative leave, which he subsequently turned into a resignation.
Balch Springs Police were alerted to the situation on August 22. Officer Pedro Gonzalez described the situation as deeply troubling, stating, “This monster violated and took advantage of his position.”
An investigation involving the Texas Department of Public Safety revealed troubling evidence. Police uncovered surveillance footage from July that depicted Gonzalez engaging in inappropriate behavior with the victim, including holding hands and physical contact in school hallways.
Authorities allege that Gonzalez exploited his role as a coach to manipulate both the victim and her parents. He reportedly texted the girl's parents, suggesting that his daughter wanted to attend a movie with the victim, promising to return home afterward. Instead, the two spent the night at the school.
A forensic interview conducted on August 27 indicated that the victim has been uncooperative, with Officer Gonzalez noting that she does not see herself as a victim, claiming instead that she is in love with him.
Sergio Gonzalez has been a part of the Mesquite ISD since 2004, serving as both a teacher and coach. The school district has expressed its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students, stating, “Anything less than that is unacceptable.”
Gonzalez is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail as the investigation continues.
In response to the uptick in school sexual abuse cases, we spoke with experienced Texas sexual abuse attorney Anjali Nigam to explain vital information about the legal rights available to children who have been groomed or sexually abused by coaches. She discusses the steps parents can take to protect their children and the avenues for holding schools accountable for failing to ensure student safety. With a focus on advocacy and support, Nigam provides clarity on how victims and their families can navigate the complex legal landscape.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. Can you explain what legal rights children have if they experience grooming or sexual abuse from a coach?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Absolutely, Darla. Victims of grooming and sexual abuse have several legal avenues available to them. They can file civil lawsuits against the perpetrator and potentially against the school district if negligence is proven. This includes failing to protect students or not responding appropriately to signs of misconduct.
DM: What steps should parents take if they suspect their child has been a victim?
AN: The first step is to document everything—conversations, any evidence, and details about the situation. Parents should also report the incident to law enforcement and the school administration. Consulting with an attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases can help navigate the legal process effectively.
DM: How can parents hold schools accountable for not preventing abuse?
AN: Schools have a duty to provide a safe environment. If they ignore warning signs or fail to act on reports of misconduct, parents can file complaints with the school district and pursue legal action. It’s important for parents to advocate for their children and ensure that schools take these matters seriously.
DM: Thank you for your valuable insights on this difficult topic.
AN: Thank you for having me, Darla. It’s vital that we continue to raise awareness and support victims in seeking justice.
