A chiropractor from Aurora has been charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse involving two teenage boys he treated, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Murtaza Hameed, 46, is accused of violating the trust placed in him as a healthcare professional, with allegations that have sent shockwaves through the west suburban community.
The most recent alleged incident occurred on January 11, 2025, when Hameed was providing treatment to a 17-year-old boy at Arwa Chiropractic, located in the 3800 block of McCoy Drive in Aurora, IL.
Hameed, a resident of Naperville, has been charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one count of attempted criminal sexual assault, and one count of misdemeanor battery. These charges stem from incidents involving two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17 at the time, according to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross.
The teenager reportedly confided in his father after the appointment, prompting the family to contact the Aurora Police Department. Authorities launched an investigation in collaboration with the DuPage County Children's Center.
During the inquiry, officials uncovered claims from a 16-year-old boy, who reported a similar experience at the same chiropractic office in 2016.
Aurora Police Detective Jennifer Hillgoth commended the courage of the victims who spoke out. "It’s incredibly difficult for anyone to come forward in situations like this," Hillgoth said. "The bravery shown by these young individuals is remarkable. Their disclosures have been pivotal in bringing these allegations to light."
The chiropractic office remains closed, with a sign on the door citing an "unforeseen emergency." Police have confirmed that Hameed was the sole practicing chiropractor at the location.
Hameed appeared in court over the weekend, where a judge ordered him to remain in custody while awaiting trial. His next court date has been scheduled for June 2.
Authorities are urging individuals who may have additional information or believe they could be victims to reach out. Detective Hillgoth emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for those who come forward. "If a child discloses something of this nature, it’s vital that parents provide support and reach out to us. We’re here to ensure their safety and well-being."
Navigating the aftermath of sexual abuse by a trusted healthcare provider can feel overwhelming, but understanding the legal resources available can provide a path forward. In an interview, Illinois attorney Erv Nevitt, who specializes in sexual abuse cases, explains the options survivors have to hold abusers accountable and pursue compensation for their suffering.
Editor Darla Medina: Given the recent allegations a chiropractor sexually assaulted two boys, what legal options do survivors of sexual abuse by a healthcare professional have in Illinois?
Attorney Erv Nevitt: Survivors have several paths they can take. From a criminal standpoint, the state prosecutes offenders, as we’re seeing in this case with Murtaza Hameed. On the civil side, individuals who have suffered abuse can file a lawsuit against the perpetrator for damages, which can include compensation for physical, emotional, and psychological harm. In some cases, the institution or practice where the abuse occurred may also be held liable if they failed to properly supervise or vet the professional.
Medina: What challenges might survivors face when coming forward with their claims?
Nevitt: One of the biggest challenges is the emotional toll of revisiting the trauma. Survivors may also fear being disbelieved or stigmatized. Legally, evidence and the statute of limitations can sometimes complicate cases. However, Illinois has made significant strides in extending the time frame for survivors to file both criminal and civil cases, recognizing that it often takes time to come forward.
Medina: What advice would you offer to someone who has experienced abuse but feels unsure about taking legal action?
Nevitt: The first step is reaching out to a trusted attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can provide clear guidance on the options available without pressuring the survivor. It’s also important to document as much as possible—dates, locations, and any communication—while memories are fresh. Most importantly, survivors should know that they’re not alone and that legal avenues exist to hold abusers accountable.
