A now-former board member of a west suburban Christian school is facing multiple serious felony charges following an investigation into the alleged long-term sexual abuse and grooming of minors, with police indicating additional victims may exist.

Michael Robert Herbert, 55, is the Aurora Christian Schools Board Member Accused of Child Sexual Abuse and Grooming in Illinois who was taken to the Kane County Adult Justice Center for a detention hearing after charges were filed on May 14, 2026. Aurora Christian Schools confirmed in a statement that Herbert no longer serves on the school board.

Alleged Abuse Reported by Adult Survivor

In December 2025, a man in his 20s came forward and told Aurora police that he had been the victim of child sexual abuse beginning when he was an early teenager. Investigators determined that Herbert allegedly used a trusted relationship to groom and abuse the alleged victim over several years in Aurora and other jurisdictions, allegedly providing gifts, money, and other incentives as part of the ongoing manipulation and abuse.

Herbert faces a total of ten charges including one count of involuntary sexual servitude of a minor under 17, four counts of criminal sexual assault in a supervisory role involving a victim between 13 and 17 years old, one count of involuntary sexual servitude of a minor aged 17 to 18, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and one count of possession of child sexual abuse material by computer.

Police Seek Additional Victims

During the investigation, Aurora police detectives found information suggesting Herbert may have had similar interactions with other teen boys. Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora police at 630-256-5500 or email tips@aurora.il.us.

What Legal Options Are Available to Survivors of Long-Term Child Sexual Abuse by a Trusted Community Figure? Illinois Attorney Ervin Nevitt Explains

When a trusted community or institutional figure is accused of long-term sexual abuse and grooming of minors, survivors and their families may have significant civil legal options beyond the criminal process. Legal Herald editor Paul Amess spoke with Illinois sexual abuse attorney Ervin Nevitt about the civil legal avenues that may be available to survivors in cases involving alleged long-term abuse by someone in a position of community authority.

Paul Amess: Ervin, when someone in a position of institutional authority is accused of long-term grooming and sexual abuse of minors, what civil legal options may be available to survivors?

Ervin Nevitt: Cases involving alleged long-term grooming and sexual abuse by a person in a trusted institutional role are among the most serious civil matters we handle. Survivors may have civil claims not only against the individual accused but also potentially against the institution with which they were affiliated. When an organization places someone in a position of trust and authority over minors, questions arise about the adequacy of its screening and oversight processes. If the institution failed to identify or act on warning signs, it may face civil liability alongside the individual.

Paul Amess: In cases where alleged abuse occurred over several years and involved gifts and financial incentives as part of the grooming process, how does that affect the civil legal landscape?

Ervin Nevitt: A documented pattern of grooming behavior involving financial incentives and manipulation over an extended period can be highly significant in civil litigation. It demonstrates deliberate and calculated conduct, which courts take very seriously. It also raises questions about how long the behavior went undetected and whether adequate protective measures were in place within any institutions the accused was affiliated with.

Paul Amess: What would you say to a survivor in Illinois who experienced abuse as a minor and is only now coming forward as an adult?

Ervin Nevitt: It is never too late to speak with an attorney. Illinois law has evolved significantly regarding statutes of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases, and survivors who experienced abuse years ago should not assume their legal options have expired without first consulting with an experienced attorney. An initial consultation is completely confidential and free of charge.
