A youth pastor from metro Atlanta is behind bars after being accused of sharing explicit videos involving children, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Authorities acted swiftly after receiving a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, leading to a search of 28-year-old Daniel Menelaou’s home in the Hunters Cover neighborhood on Wednesday.
These allegations have sent shockwaves through the community, particularly at Futures Church located at 12150 Morris Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30005, where Menelaou served as a youth pastor.
Roswell Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation executed the warrant, uncovering what they described as deeply disturbing evidence. "During the course of that search warrant, we seized several electronic devices that will be analyzed for additional evidence," said Roswell Police Officer Tim Lupo.
Court documents reveal that Menelaou is accused of uploading multiple videos depicting minors involved in sexual acts and distributing them through the messaging app Kik.
Futures Church has issued a strong statement denouncing Menelaou's alleged actions, calling them "abhorrent" and "appalling." Church officials emphasized their commitment to protecting children, stating that they had no knowledge of the allegations prior to the arrest. Menelaou was placed on administrative leave immediately following the church’s awareness of the charges and was fired once the full details came to light.
"Our hearts go out first and foremost to any victims who have been harmed," the statement read. "We remain committed to standing with all survivors of abuse, particularly children, whose suffering should never be ignored or minimized."
The church also expressed support for Menelaou’s wife, acknowledging the difficult circumstances she now faces. Officials reiterated their zero-tolerance policy for abuse and pledged to continue cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation progresses.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation, analyzing the seized electronic devices for further evidence. Officer Lupo highlighted the gravity of the allegations, particularly given Menelaou’s role as a youth pastor. "When we have somebody who is engaging in this type of behavior, who also occupies a position of authority or influence with young people, that's something that we're going to look into very closely," he said.
Law enforcement has confirmed they are working closely with the church throughout the investigation. Additional charges may be forthcoming as authorities continue to piece together the full scope of the case.
When allegations of abuse surface involving trusted community leaders, such as youth pastors, survivors and their families are often left grappling with how to respond. Navigating the legal system can feel overwhelming, yet it offers pathways for accountability, healing, and change. In a conversation with Georgia church abuse attorney John Bey, we explore the legal options available to those affected, the responsibilities of institutions like churches, and the steps survivors can take to protect their rights and hold perpetrators accountable.
Editor Darla Medina: John, thank you for joining us. In cases involving sexual abuse by a church youth pastor, what legal options are available to individuals who may have been harmed by someone in a position of authority, such as a youth pastor?
Attorney John Bey: Thank you for having me. When someone has been harmed in this context, they may have both criminal and civil options to consider. On the criminal side, law enforcement investigates and prosecutes the offender, as we’re seeing in this case. For victims, however, the civil route is often equally important. Through a civil lawsuit, they can seek compensation for the harm done, hold individuals and organizations accountable, and push for systemic changes to prevent future abuse.
Medina: What role does the church play in these cases? Can they also be held responsible?
Bey: Absolutely. If an organization, such as a church, failed to implement adequate safeguards or ignored warning signs, they could be held liable for negligence. For instance, if there were previous complaints about the individual that weren’t properly addressed, or if policies around child safety were inadequate, the institution itself could face legal consequences. Victims and their families should consult with an attorney to evaluate the specifics of their situation.
Medina: What would you say to victims and their families who are unsure about stepping forward?
Bey: I would encourage them to reach out to a trusted attorney who specializes in abuse cases. These situations are sensitive, and it’s important for victims to know they have confidential avenues to explore their options without fear of judgment or further harm. The legal process can be a powerful tool not only for seeking justice but also for helping survivors begin the process of healing.
