School Bus Crash in Pennsylvania Sends Over 20 to Hospitals

Saturday morning turned chaotic for the Aliquippa Junior High football team as their bus overturned in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. The crash, which occurred at 9:55 a.m., left 21 students injured and requiring medical attention, according to Economy Borough Police Chief Michael O’Brien.

The bus was traveling to Pine Richland Middle School for the team’s first game of the season when it came to rest on its side, tangled in live utility wires. Newsweek reported the students were evacuated from the overturned vehicle.

Students Airlifted and Taken to Area Hospitals

Emergency responders transported one student via helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital, while two others were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The remaining injured students were sent to area hospitals for further evaluation. The exact nature of their injuries remains unknown, and the crash is under investigation.

Community and School Respond to Bus Accident

In a social media post, the Aliquippa Junior High football team confirmed the accident, stating that all players were being evaluated. They also requested the community’s thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. The students, who started their school year just two days ago, were on their way to an 11 a.m. game when the crash occurred.

A Troubling Pattern of School Bus Accidents

This incident adds to a growing number of school bus crashes nationwide. Earlier this year, a school bus in Butler County, Pennsylvania, struck a tree, killing the driver and injuring multiple students. A more recent crash in Texas saw a bus carrying 42 children roll over, leaving several hurt.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that between 2014 and 2023, there were 971 school transportation-related crashes resulting in 1,079 fatalities. Most of these deaths, around 70 percent, involved occupants of other vehicles.

Investigation Underway After Bus Crash

Authorities are working to determine the cause of Saturday’s crash while the community rallies around the injured students. The overturned bus and tangled utility wires underscore the dangers of such transportation mishaps. Further updates are expected as officials and school representatives continue their inquiries.

Legal Options for Families Impacted by School Bus Accidents

When tragedy strikes on the road, families are often left with questions about accountability and their next steps. Following the recent school bus crash in Pennsylvania, which injured 21 students from Aliquippa Junior High, many are wondering what legal avenues are available to address such incidents. Experienced accident injury lawyer Guy D’Andrea shares key information on how families can navigate the aftermath of bus crashes and seek recourse for their losses.

Editor Darla Medina: When families face situations like this, what steps can they take legally?

Attorney Guy D’Andrea: The first step is understanding what caused the accident. Investigations typically examine factors like driver error, vehicle maintenance, road conditions, and even the actions of other drivers. Families can work with attorneys to access this information and determine if negligence was involved.

Medina: If negligence is found, what options do families have?

D’Andrea: They may pursue compensation through civil claims. This could involve the bus company, the driver, or other third parties, depending on who is found responsible. Compensation can address medical bills, emotional trauma, and, in tragic cases, wrongful death.

Medina: How important is timing in these cases?

D’Andrea: Very. There are statutes of limitations in Pennsylvania that limit how long families have to file a claim. Acting quickly ensures evidence is preserved and witnesses are available to provide statements.

Medina: For families who feel overwhelmed, what would you recommend?

D’Andrea: Consult with a qualified attorney as soon as possible. These situations are complex, but legal support can help families understand their rights and focus on recovery.
