Police responded to reports of a shooting at the bar and lounge at 4218 N. Liberty St. at around 2:40 a.m. on February 10. Officers found Scales suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of the business. He was rushed to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he died.

According to the police, people were leaving the bar as it was closing and an altercation began outside. Gunshots were fired and Scales was struck.

Thompson and Ford were arrested on February 12 for weapons charges and charged with murder on February 14. They are both being held at Forsyth County Detention Center with no bond and are scheduled for a court appearance on March 7.

Legal Options for Bar Shooting Victims and Their Families

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney represents bar shooting victims and their families in civil lawsuits against negligent property owners. Here is some insight from Brian regarding legal recourse options for these victims and families:

The owners of bars, nightclubs, and all other businesses have a legal duty to keep their customers and employees safe from preventable dangers. As part of this legal duty, these business owners must have protections in place against the risk of reasonably foreseeable violent crime. When a bar shooting happens, it’s important to determine if the property owner met their legal duty to safety.

In some bar shooting cases, the shooting may not have occurred if it weren’t for property owner negligence. For example, a property owner could be considered negligent if their bar had a history of violence but there were no safety measures in place, such as security guards or metal detectors for detecting weapons. In such cases of negligence, the victims and their families could have grounds for a lawsuit.
