Former Isaac Bear Teacher Sentenced to 17-31 Years For Sex Abuse of Students
Former Isaac Bear Early College High School teacher Michael Earl Kelly has been sentenced to 17-31 years in prison after pleading guilty on June 25 to all of the sex abuse charges he faced. Kelly was charged with more than 50 counts of various sex crimes against children in a case involving at least 11 victims.
The 50-year-old former teacher was arrested in February of 2018 and was initially charged with over two dozen crimes. As the investigation continued, several other charges were added, with a total of 59 charges including sexual exploitation of a minor, indecent liberties with a minor, and other charges.
The abuse happened at two schools – Laney High School from 2003 to 2006 and Isaac Bear Early College from 2006 until Kelly was arrested in 2018.
Following his arrest, a parent of one of the victims produced a copy of a complaint she had filed against Kelly in 2003 when he was teaching at Laney High School.
During the plea hearing, Assistant District Attorney Connie Jordan admonished Isaac Bear for allegedly failing to contact law enforcement after a student accused Kelly of exposing himself shortly after he began teaching at the school in 2006.

Legal Options For School Sex Abuse Victims and Their Families
Attorney contributor Brian Kent and the team of former sex crimes prosecutors at AbuseGuardian.com represent sexual abuse victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Here is Brian with some general information on the legal options available to victims of sex abuse by teachers and other school employees:
Education is a sensitive field where it’s extremely important to make sure all employees are trustworthy people. Sexual predators often seek out positions of trust that involve working with children. Schools have a legal duty to subject job applicants to thorough background checks in order to keep sexual predators away from their students. When a student reports alleged sexual misconduct by a school employee, these allegations must be taken seriously and reported to law enforcement.
Some cases of sexual abuse by teachers could have been prevented if not for the school’s failure to protect their students. For example, a school could be considered negligent for failing to contact law enforcement concerning allegations of sexual misconduct by a teacher. In cases of negligence, students who have been abused by teachers may have grounds for a lawsuit.
