Tragic Deaths Mount At New Jersey Nursing Facility
Ten children have died in a virulent outbreak of an adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, a long-term care facility in New Jersey for profoundly disabled children, NorthJersey.com reports. The outbreak has left at least 18 other children sickened, with the most recent diagnosis coming Thursday, November 1, 2018. The latest death was confirmed on October 31.
Wanaque Center Cited For Violations Of Basic Hygiene
An inspection of the Wanaque Center conducted on October 21 found deficiencies in hand washing and basic hygiene. Officials from the New Jersey Health Department witnessed Wanaque Center nurses providing medical care to severely-disabled children without first washing their hands or following other needed protocols. The inspection was performed only 12 days after health officials were notified of a “cluster of respiratory illnesses” at the facility.
Health workers are required to scrub with soap and water for between 15 and 20 seconds before touching patients, after removing their gloves and whenever their hands pass from “a contaminated body site to a clean body site.”
Wanaque Center Cared For Vulnerable Children
State officials have listed the violations as “minor handwashing deficiencies,” but in the wake of this recent devastating outbreak, parents throughout the New Jersey area are demanding answers, not least because the children living at the Wanaque Center are considered medically “vulnerable.” Due to pre-existing medical conditions, including many permanent disabilities, most children in the facility rely on ventilators or tracheostomies to breathe.
All of the children infected at Wanaque live with compromised immune systems, according to officials at the New Jersey Health Department. New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal says he is preparing to take “aggressive steps in response to this outbreak.”
Health Department Responds To Scene
The health department has sent squads of infection-control professionals to Wanaque and similar facilities that care for vulnerable children, including centers in Voorhees, Toms River and Mountainside. Elnahal is now considering whether stricter government-mandated protocols are necessary for such facilities.
The New Jersey Health Department has thus far refused to provide details on the victims, or their ages, but reports suggest that the Department became aware of a “cluster of respiratory illnesses at the Wanaque Center beginning on October 9, 2018. State health officials are now stationed inside the facility to ensure that infection-control procedures are followed.
The Wanaque Center For Nursing & Rehabilitation
The Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation is a long-term care skilled nursing facility in Haskell, New Jersey. Located at 1433 Ringwood Avenue, the facility serves pediatric patients and families throughout Northeast New Jersey, including the New York City Metro area, as well as patients throughout New York City.
The facility has stopped admitting new patients until the outbreak has passed. Health officials will declare the outbreak to be over after the first month without a new diagnosis. It is licensed to care for 92 children and 135 adults at a time. According to the facility’s most recent inspection report, it was currently home to 200 patients.
