Ex-Twinsburg High School Teacher Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison For Sexual Abuse of Student

Former Twinsburg High School teacher Laura Bucy has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually abusing a 17-year-old student on school grounds. The 33-year-old was sentenced on January 8 after pleading guilty to third-degree sexual battery in June 2019.

In addition to her prison sentence, Bucy must register as a sex offender and will be on probation for five years after her release.

Twinsburg police started investigating Bucy in September of 2018 after her ex-husband called the police to report that Bucy had confessed to having sex with one of her students. Investigators interviewed Bucy a few days later and she reportedly admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student. She admitted to having sex with the student in a classroom pantry in February or March of 2018.

Investigators spoke with the boy on the same day and he confirmed Bucy’s account, except he claimed that the abuse happened before Christmas rather than in February or March.

Bucy was arrested on September 22 and resigned from her position at the school shortly after.

Legal Recourse For Teacher Sex Abuse Victims and Their Families

Former sex crimes prosecutor and attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com represents sex abuse survivors and their families in civil lawsuits against sexual predators and negligent third parties. Here are some thoughts from Brian on the legal rights of students who have been sexually abused by teachers and other school staff members:

Teachers and others who work with children must be trustworthy people. Sadly, child predators often seek out employment in positions of trust that involve working with kids. Our attorneys have seen far too many cases of teachers and other school staff members sexually abusing students from their schools.

When a teacher is charged with sexually abusing a student, it’s important to ask if the school district did everything they could to prevent the abuse. Some of these cases only happen because of negligence, such as failing to run background checks before hiring new employees. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school district.
