Police Respond to Shots Fired at Good Times Lounge

Tuscaloosa police responded to reports of shots fired near Good Times Lounge on Culver Road in Tuscaloosa at around 3 a.m. Saturday, August 11. Officers arrived at the scene on Culver Road near the bar and Hays Court apartments. Three people were injured in the shooting – two suffered gunshot wounds in the hip areas and a third suffered minor injuries from shattering glass.

The three injured victims – men ages 29, 26, and 20 – arrived at DCH Regional Medical Center in separate private vehicles. None of their injuries are considered life-threatening.

Investigators say that an argument began in the lounge’s parking lot and both groups involved in the argument moved onto Culver Road. Investigators found over 50 shell casings along this road and another ten from the intersection of 17th Street and 43rd Avenue.

In addition to the injuries, several vehicles were damaged by gunfire. No arrests have been made yet.

Legal Options For Bar Shooting Victims

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney with some thoughts on how civil courts can help violent crime victims:

Victims of shootings and stabbings at bars, nightclubs, and other public places need to be aware of their legal rights. While we all know that the police and criminal justice system will attempt to arrest and prosecute the individual(s) who committed the crime, this system is only one potential avenue towards justice for victims. In many cases, crime victims may also have the option to file a lawsuit and recover financial compensation for their injuries. In cases of fatal shootings and stabbings, the victim’s family sometimes has the option to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

In order to file a lawsuit, the victim and their legal team will need to establish that bar owner negligence played a role in the violent incident. Bar owners have a legal responsibility to make sure their premises are safe, and reducing the risk of violent crime is part of this responsibility. In some cases, a shooting or stabbing would not have occurred if the property owner had taken proper precautions to prevent violence – such as installing security cameras, hiring security guards, and making sure the parking lot was well-lit.

Civil liability in violent crime cases is very complex and establishing liability depends on specific circumstances of a particular case. Violent crime victims and their families should consider speaking to an experienced crime victim lawyer to gain a better understanding of how the legal system can help them.
