Can Apartment Building Owners Be Responsible for Violent Crime on Their Properties?

Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney represents apartment stabbing victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Mr. Kent has offered his thoughts on the legal options available to these victims and their families.

“For apartment building owners, keeping their properties safe is a responsibility that must always be met. This includes making sure that the premises is equipped with adequate security measures in order to reduce the risk of violent crimes like shootings and stabbings. When a violent crime occurs because of inadequate security, the victims and their families may have grounds for lawsuit against the apartment building owner”, stated Mr. Kent.

He continued: “Generally speaking, a stabbing needs to be considered reasonably foreseeable in order for an apartment owner to be held liable. This may be the case if the apartment complex had a history of violent crime but no efforts were made to improve security. Overall, if a reasonably foreseeable stabbing occurs due to security negligence at an apartment complex with a history of violent crime, then the victims may have grounds for a lawsuit against the property owner.”

If you or someone you love has recently suffered from a similar incident, you can learn more about your legal options by speaking with an experienced crime victim attorney.
