Parolee Pleads Guilty to Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct in Green Acres AFC Sexual Assault Case
A parolee who was living at Green Acres AFC in Traverse City has agreed to a plea deal after being arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 63-year-old woman who was also living at the facility. 62-year-old Jay Jeffrey Stewart pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal sexual contact at a preliminary hearing on Friday, December 20.
Stewart was arrested on September 12 at Green Acres AFC after a female resident told a family member that she had been sexually assaulted. This resident suffers from a cognitive disorder, speech impairment, and severe anxiety.
Licensing consultants with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs investigated the allegations. They determined that the woman had been sexually assaulted repeatedly over a period of several months, that Green Acres employees “had knowledge” of these assaults and that they “did not respond properly to stop this behavior.”
The LARA investigators required the Green Acres AFC facility manager to submit a corrective action plan following Stewart’s arrest. The facility has announced that it will install a security monitoring system called Blink as part of this plan. Additionally, the facility will no longer accept parolees as residents.

Legal Recourse for Victims of Sexual Assault in Adult Care Facilities
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com represents sexual assault victims and their families in civil lawsuits against sexual predators and negligent third parties. Here is Brian to share some of his knowledge on the legal rights of those who have been sexually assaulted at adult care facilities:
Adult care facilities, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities all have an important responsibility to ensure the safety of their residents. In fact, safety must be the top priority of these facilities. Adequate measures must be in place in order to minimize the risk of abuse and other harm to residents. When a resident suffers due to physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, it’s important to investigate the facility for possible negligence.
Some cases of abuse in adult care facilities only happen because of negligence by the facility. For example, a facility might be considered negligent for having inadequate security measures or insufficient supervision that resulted in one resident sexually assaulting another. In cases that involve negligence, the victims and their families may have the right to file a lawsuit against the facility.
