A middle school teacher in Carroll County, Rico Thompson, 54, has been arrested following allegations of abusing a student, according to Atlanta News First. Thompson, who taught at Villa Rica Middle School, located at 614 Tumlin Lake Rd, Temple, GA 30179, faces multiple serious charges stemming from an incident reported on December 4.
Investigators were alerted after a student disclosed an inappropriate encounter that allegedly took place on school grounds. Parents, shocked by the news, expressed their concerns regarding Thompson’s behavior. One parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, described her dismay, recalling that Thompson had previously taught her other daughter.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office acted swiftly upon receiving the report, leading to the securing of an arrest warrant for Thompson. He has since been taken into custody.
Thompson now faces several charges, including child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, grooming of a minor, sexual exploitation of children, and sexual assault by individuals with supervisory authority.
A parent of a current student in Thompson’s class noted her daughter reported signs of grooming, such as physical affection and the use of affectionate nicknames, which made her feel uncomfortable. This troubling context raises significant concerns among families at the school.
Officials from the school district expressed gratitude for the prompt response of the Sheriff’s Office in addressing the situation. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining open communication with law enforcement to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.
As the investigation continues, the district has not provided any updates regarding Thompson's employment status. Meanwhile, anyone who may have additional information or who suspects they may be a victim has been encouraged to reach out to Investigator Michael Rae by calling 770-830-5916.

In the aftermath of alarming sexual abuse allegations against a middle school teacher, many families are left wondering about their legal options. To address these concerns, we spoke with John Bey, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer in Georgia. He shared valuable information on the rights of victims, the avenues available for seeking redress, and steps families can take to empower themselves in the face of such traumatic situations.
Editor Darla Medina: What legal options do victims have in cases of sexual abuse by a teacher?
Attorney John Bey: Victims can pursue several avenues. They may file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator and potentially the school district if negligence can be proven.
Medina: What about criminal charges? How does that process work for victims?
Bey: Criminal charges can be brought by the state, but victims can also work with law enforcement to provide statements that support the case. Their testimony is often vital in these situations.
Medina: Are there specific timeframes for victims to act on these cases?
Bey: Yes, there are statutes of limitations that vary by state. In Georgia, the timeframe can be extended in cases of childhood sexual abuse, which is important for victims to understand.
Medina: What advice would you give to victims who may be hesitant to come forward?
Bey: It’s important for victims to know they’re not alone. Seeking counseling and legal advice can help them navigate the complexities of their situation and empower them to take action.
