At Least 2 Years in Prison For Ex-Stockbridge Teacher Guilty of Sexual Assault

An ex-substitute teacher and coach from Stockbridge High School will spend at least two years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a former student. According to court documents, 27-year-old Allyson Moran invited the then-15-year-old student to her home in April 2017 to have sex.

During the trial, the prosecution accused Moran of abusing her position of trust and authority as a teacher to take advantage of the victim. Prosecuting Attorney Steve Kwasnik says that Moran still blames the victim and claims he initiated the sexual contact.

Moran worked as a long-term substitute teacher and girl’s soccer coach during the 2016-17 school year. The boy testified that he often ate lunch with Moran in her classroom and spent time there after school, even after he she was no longer his teacher. In March 2017, they started talking to each other on Snapchat. There were two alleged sexual assaults, days apart from each other in October 2017.

According to court records, Moran was also chatting with other male students. She was initially charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. She pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a student and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

Justice For Victims of Sexual Abuse by Teachers

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of helps survivors of sexual abuse find justice against their abusers and third parties who failed to prevent the abuse. We’ve asked him to discuss how the legal system can help those who have been sexually abused by teachers and other school employees:

Teachers are highly respected members of our communities who have the great responsibility of educating our youth and helping them grow into well-rounded adults. While teachers are worthy of this respect, a minority are sexual predators who abuse their students. This traumatizes the students and their families and damages the psyche of the community as a whole. When a teacher sexually abuses a student, we must make sure that the teacher is prosecuted, that the student gets the full support they deserve, and that the school is held accountable if they enabled the abuse to occur through negligence.

For example, a school might be considered negligent if they were previously notified of complaints of sexual misconduct by a teacher but failed to contact law enforcement or fire the teacher. In cases of school sexual abuse that involve negligence, the victims and their families may have a case for a lawsuit against the school district.

If you or your child is a survivor of child sexual abuse by a teacher or another school employee, you can learn more about your family’s legal options by speaking to an experienced sexual abuse victims lawyer.
