Former Clearcreek Elementary Teacher Indicted on Sex Abuse Charges

A former gym teacher at Clearcreek Elementary School in Springboro, Ohio has been indicted on 36 counts of gross sexual imposition for allegedly sexually abusing 28 girls. 25-year-old John Austin Hopkins was taken into custody on Monday, June 18 following a three-month investigation by the Springboro Police Department.

Investigators viewed security footage which showed Hopkins interacting with students during gym classes between December 2018 and March 2019. According to the police, that footage showed physical contact between Hopkins and more than 80 students. Warren County prosecutor David Fornshell said that the inappropriate contact mainly involved Hopkins touching students, including “positioning them to straddle him.”

A grand jury indicted Hopkins on 36 third-degree felony counts and defined the offenses as sexual contact with a person under the age of 13 and touching erogenous zones for sexual gratification.

According to the school district, Hopkins was placed on administrative leave in March after the school was made aware of possible misconduct involving the gym teacher. He resigned four days later, on March 12.

What Legal Options Are Available to Teacher Sex Abuse Victims & Their Families?

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents survivors of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. Here is some general info from Brian on the legal options available to school employee sex abuse victims and their families:

More often than not, sexual predators are close to their victims and in trusted positions. The former sex crimes prosecutors at Abuse Guardian have seen several cases of child sex abuse involving teachers and other school staff members abusing their students. Schools and other institutions that involve adults working with kids must stay vigilant and do all in their power to protect their students from these predators.

Some cases of child sex abuse involving school employees may have been preventable if not for negligence on the part of the school district. For example, if administrators had received previous sexual misconduct complaints about a teacher but failed to act on those complaints, the district might be considered negligent. In cases involving negligence, school sex abuse victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the district.

If you or your child is a survivor of sexual abuse by a school employee, you can learn more about your family’s legal options by speaking with an experienced sex abuse survivors lawyer in a free consultation.
