LARA Suspends Massage Therapist’s License After Guilty Plea
Former massage therapist Nathan Isaiah-Nelson Weems had his license suspended after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two women during massage appointments at Namaste Massage and Spiritual Wellness in Shelby Township.
The alleged assaults both took place on the same day and both involved women in their 50s. According to the criminal complaint, Weems was performing a massage on a 54-year-old woman when he placed her hand on his penis and touched her breasts. He admitted to the police that he put the woman’s hands on him.
Later that day, Weems had a 57-year-old woman in for a massage. According to the complaint, he committed the same inappropriate touching as the first assault, but also touched the woman’s vagina. He also admitted to touching the woman in this incident.
Weems pleaded guilty in August to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and six counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Legal Options For Victims of Massage Therapist Sexual Assault
Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a crime victim lawyer who specializes in helping survivors of sexual assault find justice. Here is his perspective on the legal rights of people who have been sexually assaulted by massage therapists:
Massage therapy has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen a surge in massage therapy sexual assault making headlines across the nation. Massage therapist are in positions of trust with clients in vulnerable positions. Sometimes, sexual predators see these positions as opportunities to sexually assault customers.
The victims of massage therapist sexual assault deserve justice for the trauma they’ve suffered. Taking these sexual predators off the streets and subjecting them to criminal penalties is crucial, but victims should also be aware of their legal options in the civil court system. In cases where a massage business’s negligence is partially to blame for a sexual assault, the victim could have grounds for a lawsuit against that business.
The law firm of Laffy, Bucci, and Kent has filed three massage therapist sexual assault lawsuits with 20 victims in the past month alone. If you’re curious about your legal options after being sexually assaulted by a massage therapist, you can learn more in a free consultation.
