Shawnee Animal Hospital Vet Accused of Sexually Assaulting Several Employees, Including Underage Intern
Attorney Analysis: Doctor sexual abuse attorney Brian Kent will add his own analysis in the second section of this article, regarding the legal rights of workplace sexual assault victims.
66-year-old veterinarian Dr. Michael Steward was arrested in January for allegedly sexually assaulting several of his employees at the Shawnee Animal Hospital, including a 12-year-old girl doing an internship at the hospital.
According to the police, a female employee came forward in October to report that Steward sexually assaulted her. Court documents say that Steward “grabbed her face with his hand and pulled it toward his and forcefully kissed her on the mouth.”
The police say they have surveillance video of that incident.
After the first employee came forward, several more did the same. The police say that they suspect the victims were afraid to come forward, and that Steward was “threatening and scaring them.”
A 12-year-old intern told investigators that Steward sexually assaulted her while they were caring for a newborn horse at the hospital.
Shawnee police are concerned there could be more victims. If you have any information related to this case, you are encouraged to call the department at 405-273-2121.

Legal Options For Victims of Sexual Abuse in the Workplace
Attorney contributor Brian Kent represents sex abuse victims and their families in civil lawsuits against sexual predators and negligent third parties. Brian has offered to share some of his thoughts on the legal rights of workplace sex abuse victims:
No one should have to suffer sexual harassment or sexual abuse in the workplace, but sadly, this is a serious problem affecting virtually all industries. Employers who sexually abuse their employees exploit their power in order to traumatize their victims. These victims have legal rights in both criminal and civil courts.
Sexual predators who abuse their employees can be held accountable through criminal charges if the abuse is reported to the police. Additionally, there are many cases in which victims may have grounds for a lawsuit against their employer.
