San Francisco Aide Charged with Multiple Felonies for Alleged Sexual Abuse

A classroom aide at San Francisco public schools has been charged with multiple felonies following disturbing allegations of sexual abuse involving a child over several years, according to The San Francisco Standard. Calvin Tran, 36, a paraeducator with over a decade of service, was arrested on Thursday and is facing serious charges related to incidents that reportedly occurred between 2015 and 2018. According to prosecutors, Tran allegedly molested a child in various locations, including Francisco Middle School, located at 2190 Powell St, San Francisco, CA 94133, where the victim attended.

Sexual Abuse Allegations and Arrest of School Aide

The allegations were brought to light when the victim filed a report with the San Francisco Police Department in August. Following a detailed investigation by the Special Victims Unit, claims of an inappropriate relationship were substantiated.

The police arrested Tran at the intersection of Mission and Ney streets, with concerns regarding public safety leading a judge to deny him bail in court on Friday.

Serious Charges Filed Against Classroom Aide

Tran is charged with several serious offenses, including lewd acts on a child, continuous sexual abuse, oral copulation of a person under 14, aggravated sexual assault of a child, and four counts of meeting a minor for lewd purposes. The criminal complaint highlights the extent of the alleged misconduct, describing "substantial sexual conduct" with the victim.

School District Response

In response to the allegations, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) stated that Tran was placed on leave as soon as the allegations emerged. Superintendent Maria Su emphasized the district's commitment to ensuring student safety, noting that all employees are required to complete background checks and training on recognizing and reporting potential child abuse.

"The well-being of our students is our highest priority," Su remarked. The district is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Ongoing Investigation

Though Tran faces significant charges, the investigation remains active. The San Francisco Police Department urges anyone with additional information to reach out by calling (415) 575-4444 or sending a text to TIP411, starting the message with “SFPD.”

Legal Options for Victims of School Employee Sexual Abuse

In the aftermath of the allegations against San Francisco school aide Calvin Tran, many victims may wonder about their legal options. To gain a clearer understanding, we spoke with Jason Amala, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer in California. He offers valuable information on the steps victims can take to address their experiences and seek accountability if their child has been sexually abused by a school aide.

Editor Darla Medina: With the recent allegations against the school classroom aide, what legal steps can victims take if they've experienced abuse?

Attorney Jason Amala: Victims can begin by reporting the abuse to law enforcement, which is crucial for initiating a criminal investigation. They also have the option to file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator and potentially the school district for damages related to the abuse.

Medina: What challenges do victims face in pursuing legal action?

Amala: One of the primary challenges is the emotional toll. Victims may feel reluctant to come forward due to fear of stigma or disbelief. Additionally, gathering evidence after some time has passed can be daunting, so it’s important to act swiftly.

Medina: Are there statutes of limitations that victims should be aware of?

Amala: Yes, California has specific statutes that dictate how long victims have to file lawsuits. However, recent changes have allowed for longer filing periods in some cases. It's vital for victims to consult with a legal professional to understand their specific situation.

Medina: What advice do you have for victims seeking justice in these situations?

Amala: My primary advice is to reach out to a lawyer who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can provide guidance on both the civil and criminal processes, ensuring victims know their rights and options.
