A 23-year-old former substitute teacher, Christopher Patrick Uresti, is now in custody following allegations of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old child earlier this year. The arrest comes after an extensive investigation by the San Antonio Police Department, which began on May 20 when the victim bravely disclosed the alleged abuse to a teacher, according to ABC 6.
According to court documents, Uresti initially met the victim while working as a substitute teacher at Kriewald Elementary School located at 10355 Kriewald Rd, San Antonio, TX 78245, within Southwest Independent School District (ISD). At the time, the victim was a 5th-grade student. After resigning from his position, Uresti reportedly re-established contact with the child in late 2024 through social media platforms, including Instagram and text messaging.
Investigators allege that Uresti sexually assaulted the child on three occasions between February and March 2025. The attacks reportedly occurred after Uresti picked the victim up from her home late at night, coercing the child into performing sexual acts.
Court records reveal a concerning pattern of behavior leading up to the alleged assaults. Southwest ISD had moved to terminate Uresti in October 2024 due to "inappropriate behavior," which included texting students, playing online video games with them, and sending inappropriate messages. Instead of dismissal, Uresti was permitted to resign. Despite his departure, he allegedly continued attending school events and interacting with students, prompting the district to issue a criminal trespass warning.
Uresti has been charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and is currently being held at Bexar County Jail. His bond has been set at $300,000.
The case has drawn attention to protocols surrounding employee misconduct and the measures taken to protect vulnerable students. Authorities are continuing their investigation, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
When allegations of sexual abuse emerge against educators, families often face a wave of uncertainty and questions about their rights. Texas attorney Anjali Nigam, who specializes in cases of sexual abuse, offers insight into the legal avenues available to victims and their families. From criminal charges to civil lawsuits, Nigam outlines how the legal system can hold perpetrators accountable and provide a path to justice for survivors sexually abused by a substitute.
Editor Darla Medina: In cases where a substitute teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student, what legal options are available to the victim and their family?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Victims and their families have several legal pathways. They can pursue criminal justice through law enforcement and the courts, as we see in this case. Additionally, they can file civil lawsuits against the perpetrator to seek compensation for the emotional, psychological, and physical harm suffered.
Medina: Can families take action against the school district as well?
Nigam: Yes, if there’s evidence that the district failed to act appropriately or neglected its duty to protect students, families may file a lawsuit against the district. This could include claims of negligence, such as failing to investigate prior complaints or allowing the individual access to students after termination. These cases often hinge on whether the district’s response met the standard of care expected in protecting children.
Medina: What advice would you offer to families struggling with situations like this?
Nigam: It’s important to report the abuse immediately to law enforcement and seek counseling for the child. Families should also consult with an experienced attorney to understand their rights and options. Legal action not only holds individuals accountable but can also drive systemic changes to prevent future harm.
