A doctor at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina has been accused of repeatedly sexually abusing an 11-year-old patient, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Police say that 28-year-old David Thomas Randolph sexually abused the boy every day between May 20 and May 25, 2019. The senior pediatric resident is accused of repeatedly touching the patient’s genitals during his stay at the hospital.

Randolph has been charged with second-degree assault and battery.

A police investigation determined that there was no medical reason for a daily genital examination.

The child’s family notified hospital staff members of the alleged abuse, and hospital officials then notified the police. Randolph was then placed on administrative leave.

Who Can Sue a Doctor For Sexual Abuse?

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a sexual abuse victims lawyer who has represented many victims of doctor sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. Brian has offered to share some information on the legal rights of these victims:

We all trust that our doctors have our best interests in mind, and usually, this trust is warranted. However, there have also been numerous cases of doctors sexually abusing their patients in hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities throughout the country. When a patient is sexually abused by a doctor, it’s important that the patient is aware that they have legal rights.

Doctors who sexually abuse their patients leave these victims with lifetime trauma and many patients may struggle to trust other medical professionals in the future. These predators must face criminal penalties for the harm they’ve caused. Additionally, there are many cases in which victims of doctor sexual abuse may have grounds for a lawsuit against their doctor and/or the medical facility where the abuse happened.
