3 Women Accuse Massage Therapist of Sexual Assault
A licensed massage therapist in Reno was arrested on Thursday, October 19 based on allegations that he sexually assaulted at least three female massage clients. 51-year-old Arnel Tomas has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and is being held at the Washoe County Detention Facility.
A woman reported that she was recently sexually assaulted during a massage appointment with Tomas. According to investigators, Tomas was also a suspect in a case with similar details from 2017. Both of these victims were first-time customers.
While investigating the first two allegations, detectives discovered a third potential victim. Police believe that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
According to the police, Tomas was working at several massage parlors. However, no details about the specific businesses have been released at this time. This investigation is ongoing.
Legal Options For Survivors of Massage Therapist Sexual Assault
Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com has a long track record of helping the survivors of massage therapist sexual assault. We’ve asked him to add some information on the legal rights of these survivors:
Sexual assault by massage therapists has become a nationwide problem, with new arrests making headlines nearly every month. Massage therapy involves trust between the therapist and client, but some massage therapists are predators who abuse this trust in order to sexually assault clients. As this problem has begun to make headlines, more and more survivors have come forward about their own sexual assaults at the hands of massage therapists.
The survivors of sexual assault have legal rights. In many cases, these survivors might have grounds for a lawsuit against the massage therapist and/or their employer. Many cases of massage therapist sexual assault are related to negligence on the part of the business. For example, nationwide chain Massage Envy has been sued by dozens of women who claim that the chain failed to properly report their employees for sexual assault, even going so far as to cover up the crimes.
