Former Teacher, Coach at Riverdale Academy Accused of Sexually Abusing Student
A former teacher and coach at Riverdale Academy has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a student repeatedly over the course of several years. 62-year-old Steven Pierce Weir was arrested on July 25 in Lexington, Kentucky and has been extradited back to Lousiana.
On July 18, the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint regarding the alleged sexual abuse of a juvenile by Weir. This abuse allegedly began in the summer of 2006 and continued through the victim’s graduation from high school in 2012. During this time, the victim was a student at Riverdale Academy, where Weir was a teacher and basketball coach.
Detectives investigating the allegations gathered forensic evidence which supported the victim’s claims and obtained an arrest warrant on July 23. They discovered that Weir was currently visiting family members in Lexington and forwarded the warrant to detectives with the Lexington Police Department.
Weir was arrested in Lexington on July 25 and detained at the Lexington Detention Center while awaiting extradition back to Louisiana. On July 28, Red River Parish Detectives went to Kentucky and brought Weird back with them.
Weir has been charged with 25 counts of molestation of a juvenile, 60 counts of prohibited sexual contact between and educator and a student, and one count each of extortion, computer aided solicitation of a minor, and cyberstalking.
This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
Weir was fired from the school on Thursday.

Legal Recourse For Victims of Sexual Abuse by Teachers and Coaches
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents victims of sexual crimes in civil lawsuits. We’ve asked Brian to share some general information on the legal options available to teacher sex abuse victims and their families:
Sexual predators are often found in positions of trust and authority. We regularly see this in the news with stories of teachers, coaches, and other school employees being arrested for allegedly sexually abusing students. Our schools must stay aware of the threat that sexual predators pose to their students and they must do everything they can to protect their students from these predators.
In some cases of sexual abuse involving school employees, the abuse may have been preventable if not for negligence by the school. For example, a school could be considered negligent if they had ignored complaints of inappropriate behavior between a teacher and a student. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school.
