A former caregiver at a Montgomery County daycare faced a preliminary hearing Wednesday following allegations of severe abuse involving two infants under her care, according to 6 ABC. Catalina Baldwin, 37, appeared in district court in shackles as authorities continue their investigation into the disturbing incidents that left one child hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Baldwin, who had worked at Oaks Early Learning Center located at 1173 Egypt Rd, Phoenixville, PA 19460, for five years as a lead caregiver in the infant room, was arrested on July 31. The charges stem from two separate incidents involving a 7-month-old and a 5-month-old, both of whom sustained significant injuries that medical experts described as non-accidental and indicative of trauma.
According to testimony presented in court, police were called to the daycare on July 9 when a 7-month-old girl was found unresponsive. Doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia discovered extensive injuries and performed emergency surgery to remove part of the child’s skull in order to relieve pressure caused by the trauma. Medical experts testified that the injuries were the result of violent force.
A separate incident in May involving a 5-month-old girl also raised red flags. The infant reportedly suffered a traumatic mouth injury, which doctors described as "highly concerning."
During the hearing, prosecutors revealed chilling details from Baldwin’s personal messages and internet activity. A deleted text message reportedly referred to one of the infants as a "nightmare," while an online search for "shaken baby syndrome" was also uncovered. Testimony from an Upper Providence police detective and a physician from CHOP further supported the allegations.
Representatives from Oaks Early Learning Center have not provided statements regarding the ongoing court proceedings. Baldwin, who posted bail, remains under electronic monitoring and is prohibited from unsupervised contact with children. Her next court date has been set for October.
As one of the infants continues to recover from severe injuries in the hospital, the case has prompted renewed scrutiny over childcare safety protocols and caregiver accountability.

When a trusted caregiver betrays that trust, the impact on families can be devastating. Following allegations of abuse at a Montgomery County daycare, questions arise about the legal options available to hold individuals and institutions accountable. Pennsylvania attorney Guy D’Andrea, experienced in handling cases involving daycare abuse and negligence, discusses the steps families can take to address the harm and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Editor Darla Medina: With cases like this, what legal options are available for families whose children have been harmed by a caregiver?
Attorney Guy D’Andrea: Families have several paths they can consider. First, there’s the criminal case, which is handled by law enforcement and prosecutors, as we’re seeing here. Beyond that, families can also explore civil lawsuits against both the individual responsible and potentially the daycare facility itself if negligence is involved.
Medina: What would constitute negligence on the part of the daycare?
D’Andrea: Negligence could include failing to properly screen or supervise employees, ignoring warning signs of misconduct, or not having adequate safety protocols in place. A daycare has a duty to provide a safe environment for all children in their care. If that duty is breached, they could be held accountable.
Medina: Many families might feel powerless or unsure of where to start. What would you say to them?
D’Andrea: Taking the first step is often the hardest, but consulting with an experienced attorney can help families understand their rights and options. It’s about holding the responsible parties accountable and ensuring the child's needs, including medical and emotional support, are addressed.
Medina: Do these cases often lead to systemic changes within childcare facilities?
D’Andrea: They can, absolutely. Many cases like this push facilities to reassess their policies and implement stronger safeguards. While it can’t undo the harm caused, it helps protect other children moving forward.
