In the aftermath of a former Parkersburg swim coach’s guilty plea for multiple counts of sexual abuse, many victims and their families are left wondering about their legal options. To provide clarity, we spoke with Jesse Forbes, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer in West Virginia. He shared valuable information on the rights of victims of sexual abuse by a swim coach, possible avenues for legal action, and the importance of speaking out.
Editor Darla Medina: What legal options are available for victims of sexual abuse in cases like this?
Attorney Jesse Forbes: Victims have the right to file a civil lawsuit against not just the abuser, but also any organizations that may have failed to protect them. This can include seeking compensation for emotional trauma and other damages.
Medina: Are there specific considerations victims should keep in mind when pursuing legal action?
Forbes: Yes, timing is vital. Many states have statutes of limitations, so it's important for victims to act quickly. They should also seek support from counselors or advocacy groups during the process, as it can be emotionally taxing.
Medina: What advice would you give to those who might be hesitant to come forward?
Forbes: I would encourage them to speak out. There are legal protections in place, and many attorneys offer consultations for free. It's important for victims to know they are not alone and that there can be a path toward healing and accountability.
