Off-duty OKC Police Officer Arrested On Suspicion of DUI
An off-duty Oklahoma City police officer was arrested for allegedly driving drunk and causing a head-on collision on August 17. 49-year-old Sergeant Michael Ables faces charges of DUI and transporting a loaded firearm while under the influence. Ables is a 27-year police veteran and has been placed on paid administrative leave.
James Homer and his 16-year-old son were driving home on August 17 when they were hit head-on by Able’s vehicle at the intersection of S. Merdian Ave and Newcastle Road. His son was driving at the time of the accident. Both the father and son were injured in the crash, but not seriously enough to be brought to a hospital.
Filing A Drunk Driving Accident Lawsuit in Oklahoma
Attorney Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney has a long history of defending the victims of drunk drivers. Here are some of his thoughts on filing a lawsuit after you or a loved one has been hit by a drunk driver:
As you may already know, victims of drunk drivers are often eligible to file personal injury claims against the drivers who injured them. Additionally, the families of fatal DUI accident victims often have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver. Additionally, Oklahoma and many other states have dram shop laws which allow third parties to be held liable for injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers.
According to Oklahoma’s dram shop laws, an alcohol vendor who serves or sells alcohol to someone who is “noticeably intoxicated” can be held liable for damages if that person injures someone else because of that intoxication. So if a bartender continues to serve alcohol to someone who is obviously drunk and that person causes a drunk driving accident that night, the bar owner could possibly be forced to pay financial compensation to the victim if a lawsuit is filed.
