Legal Options For Victims of Sexual Assault at Gyms & Martial Arts Studios

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who helps victims of sexual assault find justice in civil cases. Brian has offered to share some general info on the legal rights of those who have been sexually assaulted by instructors at martial arts studios and gyms:

Martial arts students trust their instructors to conduct themselves professionally and treat them with respect. No one ever expects to be sexually assaulted by an instructor while training at a martial arts studio. But sadly, there have been several cases of martial arts instructors sexually assaulting students who were training with them.

Victims of martial arts instructor sexual assault should be aware of their legal rights. Reporting the assault to law enforcement is important, because the perpetrator needs to be investigated, prosecuted, and removed from the studio before others are also assaulted. In many cases, the victims of these crimes also may have grounds for a civil lawsuit against the studio, which can provide financial compensation for personal and financial difficulties suffered as a result of the assault.

The available legal options will depend on the specific circumstances of the case. If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual assault by a martial arts instructor, you can learn more about your legal options by speaking with one of our experienced sexual assault victims lawyers in a free consultation.
