1 Bennie Dover Middle Employee Arrested, 4 Others Placed On Leave in Sex Abuse Investigation

Gaskin was first arrested in April of this year and initially only charged with risk of injury to a minor. He was arrested again on May 7, which is when the additional charges were added. Gaskin was placed on paid leave at the time of his first arrest and was fired on May 9.

Several other school staff members have also faced discipline in connection with the investigation. Three female staff members, including director Alison Burdick, have been placed on leave. Administrator Lawrence Washington, who was responsible for supervising Gaskin, has also been placed on leave. The school’s human resources director cited the handling of confidential information as the reason for Burdick’s leave.

Gaskin’s job was to prevent bullying at the school and he would often be in charge of investigations into bullying incidents. He began working at the school in 2015.

A female 8th-grade student told police that Gaskin called her into his office and sexually abused her towards the end of the 2016-17 school year, allegedly recording the encounter.

Gaskin is also accused of having consensual sexual encounters with other staff members on school property. He allegedly filmed some of these encounters without the other party’s consent.

Legal Recourse For Victims of Sexual Abuse by School Employees

At Abuse Guardian, our team of former sex crimes prosecutors regularly see cases of school employees sexually abusing students. Schools have a responsibility to make sure all of their staff members are trustworthy and that their students are safe from the threat of sexual predators. In some cases, the abuse of students may have been prevented if it weren’t for negligence by the school.

Some common forms of school negligence in lawsuits for sexual abuse include:

  • Failing to run a background check and hiring an employee with a criminal history
  • Failure to report suspected abuse to law enforcement or child protective services
  • Ignoring student complaints of sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior by employees

There are many forms of negligence and establishing negligence will likely require guidance from an experienced sex abuse survivors attorney. If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual abuse by a school employee, you can learn more about your legal options by speaking with one of our attorneys in a free consultation.
