Second New London Schools Employee Arrested For Sexual Assault

A second New London Public Schools employee has been arrested on sexual assault charges. 25-year-old Jevon Elmore was charged with sexual assault and faced a judge on Friday, May 24. He is being held on a $150,000 bond.

Elmore is the second district employee to be arrested on sexual assault charges this year. His arrest was part of a larger investigation that began after 35-year-old Corriche Gaskin was arrested on charges of second-degree sexual assault, possession of child pornography, risk of injury to child, and other offenses in April.

Police have not confirmed if the alleged victim in Elmore’s case was a student, only confirming that he or she was not another staff member. Elmore worked as a paraprofessional at both New London High School and Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School. Gaskin was also employed at Bennie Dover Jackson.

5 New London Schools Employees Placed On Leave Amid Sex Abuse Investigation

After Corriche Gaskin was arrested, four New London Schools employees were placed on administrative leave in connection with the investigation. In an interview with News 8, New London school board member Jason Catala said, “My biggest concern when this came out in March was that individuals knew about it.”

Legal Options For Victims of School Employee Sex Abuse

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents victims of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. Here is Brian with some general thoughts on the legal options available to school employee sex abuse victims and their families:

Schools have a responsibility to make sure their students are safe from foreseeable dangers, including sexual predators. Sadly, these predators often seek out positions in schools and other workplaces where they’ll regularly be around children. It’s crucial that school administrators are aware of these dangers and that preventative measures are put in place to keep sexual predators out of our schools.

When a school employee is charged with sexually abusing a student, it’s important to determine if the school fulfilled their legal duty to protect their students. In some cases, the abuse may have been prevented if it weren’t for school district negligence. For example, a school district might be considered negligent for hiring an employee without first running a background check or for failing to report suspected sexual misconduct to the authorities.

In cases of school district negligence, sexual abuse victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.
