Legal Options for Victims of Sex Abuse by Coaches

Attorney contributor and former sex crimes prosecutor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com helps victims of sexual abuse find justice in civil cases. Brian has offered to share some general information on the legal rights of sports sex abuse victims and their families:

Sexual predators are often found in fields that involve working or volunteering with children, including youth sports. The gymnastics field, in particular, has seen widespread reports of sexual abuse by coaches, team doctors, and others who work in this field. Those who work in administrative and leadership roles in youth sports must stay aware of the risk that sexual predators pose to the children under their watch and must do all that they can to keep these children safe.

The victims of sexual abuse in youth sports must be aware of their legal rights. Reporting the abuser to law enforcement is an important first step, as these predators must be investigated and prosecuted before they can continue hurting children. Additionally, victims of sexual abuse have legal rights in the civil justice system. In many cases, these victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.

Youth sports organizations can be held liable for sexual abuse if negligence allowed the abuse to occur – such as ignoring previous complaints of abuse involving a coach.

If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual abuse in youth sports, you can learn more about your legal rights by discussing your case with an experienced sex abuse victims attorney.
