Are Bar Owners Liable For Shootings on Their Properties?

Attorney contributor, Brian Kent of https://crimevictim.attorney has offered his insight on the legal options available to bar shooting victims and their families.

“Business owners have a legal obligation to keep their patrons as safe as possible from any foreseeable hazards. For example, if the bar has experienced violent crimes in the past, then the owner is obligated to alter their safety measures appropriately in order to prevent more crime from occurring. This could mean hiring more security guards, or establishing video surveillance”, said Mr. Kent.

Generally speaking, failure to provide adequate security to patrons could leave the property owner partially liable for the shooting. However, a victim’s lawyer would need to prove that the bar owner was aware of previous violent crimes, and ignored their obligation to prevent future crimes from occurring.
