Substitute Teacher Accused of Sexually Abusing 2 Clovis Grove Elementary Students
A Menasha-area substitute teacher faces several sex crimes charges for allegedly sexually abusing two 5-year-old students at Clovis Grove Elementary School. 27-year-old Alex Patterson, of Greenville, has been charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child and three counts of child enticement.
The criminal complaint states that Patterson allegedly inappropriately touched a 5-year-old girl in a bathroom at Clovis Grove Elementary School while he was a substitute teacher there. He is also accused of attempting to use a massager on this child.
A second 5-year-old girl told investigators that Patterson reached inside of her pants and touched her, according to the criminal complaint.
The Winnebago County District Attorney’s office believes that “this appears to be not a single isolated incident but part of a larger pattern.”
There are no statements from Patterson in the criminal complaint. He is scheduled to appear in court again on December 23.

Justice For School Sex Abuse Victims & Their Parents
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com stands by sex abuse victims and their families in their fights for justice. We’ve asked Brian to add some general information concerning the legal rights of school sex abuse victims and their parents:
Parents trust that their children will be safe during the school day. Our schools have a legal and moral duty to make sure their students are protected from preventable dangers – including all forms of abuse. But sadly, our school system also has widespread problems with employees sexually abusing their students.
Sexual predators often seek out positions in education and other fields that involve working with children. This is why school officials must stay diligent in making sure that their employees are trustworthy and that their students are safe. When a teacher or another staff member is charged with sexually abusing students, both the accused teacher and the school should be investigated.
The accused teacher will be subjected to a criminal investigation, while the school can also be investigated by attorneys for potential negligence. Some incidents of sexual abuse in schools only happen because of negligence by the school – such as inadequate safety protections for students. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.
