A 70-year-old man has been detained on charges of sexual assault following an extensive investigation into a troubling incident that took place at a Lubbock gym. Reymundo Almaraz was apprehended after several community members identified him as the suspect involved in the assault of a teenager at the TruFit gym, situated near 82nd Street and Slide Road.
A ministry leader from Emmanuel Worship Center in Lubbock noted that Almaraz had "retired some time in the summer." While FOX 4 reached out to the church for a statement, no written response has been received thus far.
Law enforcement officials responded to the gym around 10 p.m. on June 30. Upon arrival, they discovered that the victim, a 17-year-old male, was en route to the hospital for treatment. The teenager recounted the harrowing events that transpired while he was at the gym with his girlfriend.
While waiting to use the restroom in the locker room, the victim noticed Almaraz in his underwear, seemingly watching or recording another teenager. The situation escalated when the victim entered a bathroom stall. Almaraz allegedly entered the stall next to him, persistently placing his leg underneath the partition and demanding access to the victim's stall.
According to the police report, after the victim exited the stall, Almaraz blocked the door to a dressing room with a chair and locked it. He reportedly held the teenager in place, made sexual demands, and sexually assaulted him. The victim attempted to fight back, but Almaraz allegedly overpowered him, slamming him against a bar in the dressing room and injuring his knee. After a brief struggle, the victim managed to kick Almaraz away and fled to the main gym area to find his girlfriend.
Following the release of information regarding the assault, Almaraz was quickly identified and arrested on Thursday. He is no longer listed as a detainee at the Lubbock County Detention Center.

In the aftermath of a troubling incident involving sexual abuse at a gym, families often face overwhelming uncertainty and a myriad of questions. To address these concerns, we spoke with Anjali Nigam, an experienced Texas lawyer specializing in sexual abuse cases. Nigam outlines the legal avenues available to families whose loved ones have suffered abuse, particularly when the offender holds a position of authority, such as a pastor. This conversation illuminates the important steps families can take to navigate the legal landscape following such traumatic events.
Editor Darla Medina: Can you explain what legal options are available for victims of sexual abuse, particularly those abused by someone in a position of authority, like a pastor?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Victims have several avenues for legal recourse. They can file civil lawsuits against the perpetrator and any organizations that may have been negligent in protecting them. This can include churches or other places of business, such as a gym.
Medina: What about criminal charges? How does that process work?
Nigam: Criminal charges can be pursued through law enforcement, and it’s vital for victims to report the crime as soon as possible. The state handles these cases, and they can lead to significant penalties, including imprisonment for the offender.
Medina: What should a victim do if they wish to take action?
Nigam: The first step is to speak with a qualified attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can guide the victim through the legal process and help them understand their rights and options.
