Morrilton Doctor Charged with Sexual Assault, Video Voyeurism
A doctor at CHI St. Vincent Morrilton Hospital has been charged with sexual assault and video voyeurism in a case involving a patient.
The victim, 54-year-old Wanda Chism, spoke with ABC 7 KATV in Little Rock. She said says that Dr. Silakhone Douangkesone inappropriately touched her and took photographs of her private area with his cell phone when she visited the hospital last June for mini-strokes and severe headaches.
The police got a warrant for the doctor’s phone. The FBI spent six months unlocking the Samsung S8 and eventually discovered two photos, which were shown to Ms. Chism on January 23. She told investigators that the photos were of her private parts.
Dr. Douangkesone has been placed on administrative leave and the hospital announced that they will cooperate with local authorities. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 6.
Legal Recourse for Victims of Doctor Sexual Assault
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now represents survivors of sexual assault in civil lawsuits. We’ve asked him to share some input on legal recourse for survivors of sexual assault by doctors and other medical professionals:
The professional relationship between doctors and the communities they serve is sacred. Doctors take an oath to do all that they can to provide the best quality of medical care to their patients. Most of these doctors honor this oath and conduct themselves in a professional manner. But unfortunately, the medical field also has a serious problem with doctors and other healthcare professionals sexually abusing patients.
There have been thousands of reports of sexual abuse by medical professionals across the United States. Sadly, the medical field often protects these predators, in some cases failing to investigate claims and even allowing accused doctors to continue practicing. Many survivors of these crimes have begun fighting back by filing lawsuits against their abusers and the facilities where the abuse occurred.
