Social Worker Accused of Inappropriate Behavior with Students

Police with the Clark County School District have arrested a social worker for alleged sexual misconduct involving two students at Chaparral High School. 31-year-old Anthony Winston has been charged with kidnapping a minor, child abuse, two counts of open and gross lewdness, and two counts of attempt to engage in sexual conduct with a student 16 years or older.

Winston was a contract employee for the CCSD, serving as a “safe school professional.” This position was similar to that of a social worker and Winston was in the process of becoming a licensed school social worker.

Winston was booked in the Clark County Detention Center on Friday, March 1. His employment was terminated on February 28. He was contracted through Progressus Therapy.

Winston is the fifth Clark County School District worker arrested this year – three have been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior involving minors.

Legal Recourse for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by School Employees

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor who now helps survivors of sexual violence find justice in civil lawsuits. We’ve asked him to share some information on the legal options available to families affected by sexual abuse involving school employees:

Student safety must be the top priority of every school. Unfortunately, predators often seek out positions of trust and authority in fields like education. This means our schools must remain diligent by properly screening new job applicants and responding appropriately when allegations of sexual misconduct or abuse involving employees arise.

When a school employee abuses students, it’s important that the employee is arrested and that the school is investigated to determine if negligence played a role in the abuse. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school. An example of negligence might be failing to run a background check and hiring an employee with a history of sexual misconduct.
