Vegas Massage Therapist Arrested On Sexual Assault Charges

A Las Vegas massage therapist has been arrested after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her during a massage at a chiropractor’s office in May. On November 15, Las Vegas police arrested 43-year-old Jose Garcia-Romero and charged him with sexual assault for the alleged incident.

According to the arrest report, the alleged victim told police that she visited her chiropractor’s office on May 21 for an appointment. Before seeing her doctor, she received a massage from Garcia-Romero. The woman says that near the end of the massage, Garcia-Romero lifted up the sheet covering the woman and put his mouth on her genitalia. She immediately closed her legs and said “no,” and Garcia-Romero then left the room.

As of Tuesday, November 20, Garcia-Romero remained in the Clark County Detention Center on $10,000 bail. The specific business where Garcia-Romero worked is not currently available.

How the Legal System Can Help Victims of Massage Therapist Sexual Assault

Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is an advocate for sexual assault survivors who has experience in both criminal and civil courts. After acting as a sex crimes prosecutor in his early career, Brian now represents survivors in civil lawsuits. Here are a few of his thoughts on how the legal system can help those who have been sexually assaulted by massage therapists:

Massage therapy is built on trust, as customers are in vulnerable positions during appointments. But unfortunately, a minority of massage therapists are sexual predators who abuse their positions of trust in order to sexually assault their customers. Hundreds of survivors from all over the country have been fighting back against massage therapy sexual abuse by telling their stories and taking their cases to court.

In most incidents of massage therapy sexual assault, the victim has grounds for a lawsuit against both the perpetrator and the business where the sexual assault occurred. Taking legal action this way helps demand accountability from the companies who have failed to keep their customers safe, as well as the person responsible for committing the assault. These lawsuits also can help victims find a sense of justice and receive financial compensation for the trauma they’ve suffered.
