Former Lansing School Cop Charged with Sexual Assault
An ex-cop assigned to Eastern High School in Lansing was arrested on Tuesday and charged with several counts of sexual assault and related charges. Matthew Priebe was the school resources officer there until May 2018, when several students came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. He was placed on administrative leave on May 31.
On Tuesday, Priebe was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct, attempted fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of assault and battery, and distributing obscene material to children.
Priebe had been a member of the Lansing Police Department for a decade before he resigned on June 22, prior to the completion of the Michigan State Police internal investigation.
Court records allege that Priebe tried to kiss and sexually abuse three girls in his school office and patrol vehicle. The alleged incidents happened over a three-year period. The youngest victim was 14 and the oldest was 17 at the time of their assaults.
He is also accused of sending sexual videos and photos to some of the victims.
Priebe has a court appearance for a probable cause conference scheduled for March 1. He has been released on a personal recognizance bond of $25,000.
Justice for Survivors of Sexual Abuse in Schools
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com represents survivors of sexual violence, helping them fight for justice in civil lawsuits. Here is some information from Brian on how survivors of sexual abuse by school employees can find justice:
Student safety must be the top priority for all of our schools. But sadly, schools are often targeted by sexual predators who seek out positions of trust and authority. These predators then exploit their positions as a way to commit terrible crimes of sexual violence. When allegations of sexual abuse involving a school employee arise, it’s important to determine if the school is partially responsible for failing to keep their students safe.
In some cases, sexual abuse by a school employee may not have happened if it weren’t for negligence on the part of the school district. Some examples of such negligence include failing to run a background check before hiring a new employee or failing to report allegations of sexual misconduct to law enforcement. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have a strong case for a lawsuit.
