La Pine High School teacher Deborah Parker was arrested on Friday, May 29 for allegedly sexually abusing a former student.

The 55-year-old teacher has been charged with eight counts of second-degree sex abuse. She is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old La Pine High School student from 2010 to 2011.

The former student filed a report with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office in May. Police collected evidence and statements based on that man’s statements and witness information.

Parker was arrested at her home on the 54000 block of Tamarack Road in Bend and booked at the Deschutes County Jail.

Legal Options For Victims of Sexual Abuse by Teachers

Attorney contributor Brian Kent is an experienced sex abuse victim lawyer who has represented victims of teacher sex abuse in civil lawsuits. Brian has offered to share some of his knowledge on the legal rights of these victims:

Sexual abuse is a major crisis in our nation’s schools, as there have been reports of teachers, coaches, and other school employees abusing students throughout all 50 states. School officials must take this crisis seriously and must do everything possible to protect their students from sexual predators.

There must be a full investigation when a teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student. Along with a criminal investigation of the teacher, the school should be investigated to determine if negligence allowed the abuse to happen – such as failing to run a background check and hiring a teacher with a history of sexual misconduct.

In cases of negligence, student sex abuse victims may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school district.
