Kingston High School Coach Accused of Sexually Abusing a Student

Last Update: 7/13/2020

Attorney Commentary: In the second part of this story, lawyer Laurence Banville will discuss the legal rights of student victims of sexual abuse.

A varsity field hockey coach at Kingston High School in Kingston, NY has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl who played on the team.

29-year-old Erin Koonz was arrested on Friday, June 12. She has been charged with sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police started investigating these allegations in March after receiving a report regarding an inappropriate relationship between Koonz and a 16-year-old student. According to the investigation, Koonz allegedly sexually abused the student in February.

Koonz was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Ulster Court at a later date.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center at 845-334-5155.

Legal Rights of Student Sex Abuse Victims

Attorney contributor Laurence Banville represents sex abuse victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Laurence has offered to share some info on the legal rights of students who have been sexually abused by coaches and other school employees:

Sexual predators are often found in positions of trust, including teaching, coaching, and other educational professions. School officials must do everything they can to make sure all employees are trustworthy and students are safe from sexual predators. But sadly, there have been widespread reports of teachers and coaches sexually abusing students throughout the country.

When a coach or teacher is charged with sexually abusing a student, the school should also be investigated. Some of these cases of abuse only happen due to negligence by school officials, like failing to run background checks or ignoring past complaints of inappropriate behavior by the employee who was arrested. In cases of negligence, school sex abuse victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.
