Ex-Bradford High Dean of Students Charged with Sexually Assaulting Former Student

A former official with Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin has been charged with sexually assaulting a former student at that school in 2008. 42-year-old Curtiss W. Tolefree has been charged with three counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff and two counts of exposing genitals to a child.

Tolefree is currently the principal of Beulah Park Elementary School in Zion, Illinois. Before that, he was the principal of Washington Middle School in Kenosha until he resigned in 2018 amid allegations of sexual relationships with staff members.

According to the criminal complaint, Kenosha police started investigating Tolefree in the fall of 2018 after a woman reported that she had a sexual relationship with Tolefree when she was a 17-year-old student at Bradford High School.

The woman told police that she and Tolefree had sex almost every day on school grounds during her junior year. He is also accused of meeting the girl for sexual activity at his home, his vehicle, and hotels in the area.

Tolefree has not yet been arrested as of December 10. He is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on January 2.

Justice For School Sex Abuse Victims and Their Families

Attorney Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com is a former sex crimes prosecutor and current civil sex abuse victims lawyer. Brian represents victims and their families in sex abuse lawsuits against sexual predators and negligent third parties, such as schools. Brian has offered to share some thoughts on the legal rights of those who have been sexually abused by school employees:

Tragically, sexual predators are often individuals in positions of trust who work with children. Our sex abuse victims lawyers see many cases involving school employees who have sexually abused students. These victims and their families deserve answers, support, and justice for the trauma they’ve suffered due to abuse.

In sex abuse cases involving school employees, it’s important to investigate both the employee and the school itself. The employee should be reported for a criminal investigation, while attorneys can investigate the school and circumstances of the case to determine if a form of negligence is partially to blame for enabling the abuse.

For example, the school could be considered negligent if the accused employee had a history of sexual misconduct at other schools but was hired anyway.

In cases of negligence, victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the school or school district.

If you or your child is a survivor of sexual abuse by a school employee, you can learn more about your legal rights by speaking with one of our experienced sex abuse victims lawyers in a free consultation.
