Gunshot Wound Victim Found in Vehicle Near Northpark Mall
Jackson police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside of a car near Northpark Mall and authorities believe he was wounded in a shooting in the parking lot of a nearby night club. Another man was killed in the same shooting at Club Anonymous on Medgar Evers Boulevard.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at the club at around 1 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, officers discovered 32-year-old Steve Willis inside of a vehicle and suffering from an upper body gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
According to witnesses, Willis and another man were shooting at each other outside of the club and Willis was attempting to drive away from the scene. Investigators now believe that the man found near Northpark Mall was also wounded in the shooting outside of Club Anonymous. That man, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized with what is believed to be a non-life-threatening injury.
Police think that the two men knew each other. Anyone with information regarding this case has been asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS.
Legal Options for Nightclub Shooting Victims and Their Families
Attorney contributor Brian Kent of CrimeVictim.Attorney represents shooting victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Here is some insight from Brian on the legal options available to these families:
Owning a business comes with many responsibilities and the chief responsibility should always be keeping the property safe from foreseeable dangers. This includes making sure that the property is protected from the risk of reasonably foreseeable violent crime. But sometimes, shootings, stabbings, and other violent acts happen at bars, nightclubs, and other properties due to inadequate security and other forms of property owner negligence.
In cases where a bar or nightclub shooting is deemed reasonably foreseeable, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit if the property owner’s negligence is found to have played a role in the incident. For example, a property owner might be considered negligent for failing to hire security guards or have guests searched for weapons before entering.
