Fatal Seven-Vehicle Crash on I-75 in Collier County, FL

A tragic seven-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 75 near Mile Marker 96 in Collier County resulted in one death on Friday morning, according to Gulf Coast News Now.

Multiple Commercial Semitrucks Involved in Fatal Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident involved three commercial semitrucks and four passenger vehicles. The chaos ensued when one semitruck stopped in the travel lane due to smoke-related low visibility. This prompted another semitruck to crash into it, triggering a chain reaction involving the remaining vehicles.

One Victim Killed and Multiple Others Injured

The crash claimed the life of a 52-year-old man from Madeira Beach. Two others suffered serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital, while one individual sustained minor injuries and was also transported for medical care.

During the aftermath, both southbound I-75 at Exit 101 and northbound I-75 at Exit 80 experienced complete shutdowns. Fortunately, the roads have since reopened. However, authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Understanding Legal Options After a Semitruck Accident

In the aftermath of a devastating semitruck accident, victims and their families often find themselves navigating a complex legal landscape. To clarify the available options, we spoke with Michael Haggard, a seasoned personal injury lawyer specializing in truck accident cases. He shares valuable information on the steps victims can take to secure compensation and the factors that influence legal proceedings.

Editor Darla Medina: What legal options do victims have when involved in a semitruck accident?

Attorney Michael Haggard: Victims or their families can pursue several avenues for compensation. This can include filing a claim with the trucking company's insurance, seeking damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If negligence is proven, a lawsuit may also be an option.

Medina: What factors determine negligence in these cases?

Haggard: Several factors come into play, such as driver fatigue, equipment failure, or inadequate training. Investigating the trucking company’s compliance with safety regulations is also key.

Medina: How important is it for victims to act quickly after an accident?

Haggard: Very important. Gathering evidence and information while it’s still fresh can significantly strengthen a case. There are also statutes of limitations that can affect their ability to file a claim.
