A former volunteer youth minister at Second Baptist Church, located at 6400 Woodway Dr, Houston, TX 77057, has been arrested for possessing child pornography, according to ABC 13.
Authorities acted on a tip that led them to 27-year-old Carter Thomas. He reportedly admitted to struggles with accessing child pornography online. At the time the allegations surfaced, Thomas was supervising youth activities at the church.
A thorough search of his electronic devices revealed twenty-three explicit images of child pornography. Following the investigation, court documents indicate that Thomas has posted bond. Nevertheless, a key condition of his release mandates that he must stay at least 1,000 feet away from areas where children gather.

In the aftermath of a former youth minister's arrest for possessing child pornography, many may wonder about the legal recourse available to victims of sexual abuse. To explore this pressing issue, we spoke with Anjali Nigam, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer based in Houston. Nigam shared valuable information regarding the potential legal options for those affected by abuse from individuals in positions of trust within religious organizations.
Editor Darla Medina: Given this recent arrest, what legal options are available for victims of sexual abuse by church volunteers?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Victims have several avenues they can explore. They can pursue civil lawsuits against the individual and potentially the organization if negligence can be proven. The church may have legal responsibilities to protect its members.
Medina: What does the process of filing a lawsuit typically look like?
Nigam: The process begins with collecting evidence and documentation of the abuse. Then, we file a complaint in civil court. It’s critical for victims to understand their rights and the support they can receive during this time.
Medina: That sounds significant. What support systems exist for these victims?
Nigam: Many organizations provide counseling and legal support specifically for survivors of abuse. It’s important for them to reach out for help, as the emotional toll can be substantial.
