Chappy’s Golden Shores Staff May Face Charges for Alleged Abuse & Neglect

Authorities in Minnesota say that criminal charges are expected against Chappy’s Golden Shores. Staff members of the nursing home in Hill City have been accused of beating and sexually assaulting residents, along with denying them proper medical care.

In February, the Minnesota Department of Health revoked the license of Chappy’s Golden Shores following an investigation into suspected widespread abuse of residents at the facility. The Department has released a dozen reports detailing the harm of residents.

Investigators say that one resident was beaten badly by staff members and later died from brain injuries due to this beating.

Local law enforcement agencies have begun their own criminal investigations into the assisted living facility. According to an article by the Star Tribune, Aitkin County Sheriff Dan Guida said his department knows of at least five criminal investigations which could result in both felony and gross misdemeanor charges. Guida reportedly said that multiple search warrants have already been executed.

On May 7, the Department of Health released additional documents detailing allegations of abuse and mistreatment. A former male resident told investigators that a staff member sexually assaulted him while helping him in the shower. The same resident also made several allegations of physical abuse by staff members.

State investigators also determined that Chappy’s allowed residents to return to the facility after their home care license had been suspended. Chappy’s allegedly failed to provide adequate care and supervision to these residents. One resident who had congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and diabetes saw their condition worsen, resulting in hospitalization.

The state reports also mentioned cases of financial exploitation of residents.

Justice for Nursing Home Abuse Victims and Their Families

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of is a former prosecutor who now represents victims of sexual abuse and other crimes in civil lawsuits. Here are a few of his thoughts concerning the legal rights of families affected by nursing home abuse and neglect:

Nursing homes should be safe, welcoming environments that provide their residents with the quality of care they deserve. But tragically, our attorneys have seen numerous cases of nursing home staff abusing and neglecting their residents. Negligent nursing homes who allow their residents to suffer deserve to be held accountable. And the residents and their families deserve justice.

In many cases of abuse and neglect in nursing homes, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit against the facility. Lawsuits can be filed for physical and sexual abuse, along with problems caused by neglectful care. If you or a loved one has suffered due to nursing home abuse or neglect, you can learn more about your family’s legal options by speaking to an experienced nursing home abuse attorney.
