Student Accusing Oakland International Academy Employee of Sexual Assault Testifies

Last Thursday, October 10, a student with special needs who has accused an Oakland International Academy High School employee of sexual assault testified in court.  The school’s community liaison officer Ibrahim Aljahim has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Aljahim is accused of taking the 18-year-old special needs student away from the school in his car and sexually assaulting him while parked across the street from the school. The student testified regarding these details on Thursday. He said that he went with Aljahim because he follows the Koran, which he said teaches him to do what his elders say.

In a previous court appearance one week prior, on October 3, prosecutors told the court that Aljahim is also being investigated for three other reported sexual assaults involving two other victims – one who is under the age of 16 and another who is over 18 years old, but disabled.

Aljahim could face life in prison if convicted. Another hearing is scheduled for next week.

Legal Options for School Sex Abuse Victims & Their Families

Attorney contributor Brian Kent of AbuseGuardian.com helps sexual abuse survivors and their families find justice in civil lawsuits. Here is Brian with some general information on the legal rights of school sex abuse survivors and their families:

Sexual predators are often found working in positions of trust, including as staff members in our schools. School leadership must stay aware of the fact that these sexual predators pose a danger to their students. Preventative measures must be in place to protect students from these predators.

When a student is sexually abused by a school staff member, it’s important to determine if the school failed in their legal duty to protect their students. For instance, the school could be considered negligent if they had ignored previous allegations of sexual misconduct involving the accused employee. In cases of negligence, the victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.

If you or your child is a survivor of sexual abuse by a school staff member, you can learn more about your family’s legal rights by speaking with an experienced sex abuse victims lawyer.
